Second Chance Boyfriend (Drew + Fable #2) by Monica Murphy Review:

Goodreads Book Blurb:
Lost. That one single word best describes my life at this very moment. I lost the last games of the season and both my team and my coach blame me. I lost the last two months because I drowned in my own despair like a complete loser. And I lost the only girl who ever mattered because I was afraid being with me would destroy her.

But now I realize how truly lost I am without her. She has become my story…and even though she acts like she’s moved on, I know she still thinks about me just as much as I think about her. She’s beautiful, sweet—and so damn vulnerable, all I want to do is help her. Be there for her.

Love her…

If only I could convince Fable to give me a second chance. Then I wouldn’t feel so lost anymore, and neither would she. We could be found together.

Forever.

The Review:

I freaking LOVED this book. I simply couldn’t put it down and believe me, my family tried to drag me away every time I turned my Nook on. But finally I put my foot down and enjoyed the story that is Drew + Fable.

Second Chance Boyfriend is book two in the Drew + Fable series. It picks up two months after the unbelievably epic One Week Girlfriend ends. Drew has gone off to try and fix himself, leaving Fable behind to cope with the knowledge of Drew’s past, her own scandalous past and undesirable present as well as the memories of a love she thought she was undeserving of to begin with.

Drew…
Drew’s head is a mess. After the soul shattering revelations at the end of One Week Girlfriend, Drew has desperately decided he needs to sort out his life, alone, before he drags Fable down with him. He feels he doesn’t deserve her and he cheapens her life just by being in it.

But after two months of attempting to rid himself of his demons, his best laid plans seem to falter when the heartbreak becomes unbearable. He’s in love with Fable, mind, soul and body. He’s half a person with her gone and all the healing he’s trying to do, seem impossible and pointless without her by his side. Guilt, pride and fear have kept him away, but a chance meeting brings them face to face and fate seems to have a different plan for them.

Quote Spotlight…
Her name. Fable. A story. A myth. A fairy tale. She’s my story. I want to live and breathe and die for her and she has no idea how much she consumes my thoughts. – Drew

Fable…
Fable is hurt. She gave it her all. She laid her heart bare in Drew’s hands and he broke it, shattering it into pieces. She let her carefully placed walls down long enough to let Drew in and she fell in love, knowing he could and probably would hurt her, but she hoped he wouldn’t. Then he left. She feels used, abandoned and utterly alone. She feels like she wasn’t enough, wasn’t good enough to hold onto him. Her life is stuck and she’s going nowhere. But the absolute best part about Fable is she’s strong. She has responsibilities and though she takes a moment to drown in her sorrow, she picks herself up and decides her problems won’t consume her. She will carry on, even if she carries on with half a heart.

When a well dressed stranger comes into Fables place of work and offers her another deal too good to be true, she’s obviously skeptical but intrigued. Finally deciding Drew is never returning and she needs to move on, she accepts the offer, putting those walls firmly back in place and her new life begins.

But fate can be a strange and cruel creature because Fables past literally stumbles right into her present and Fable and Drew have to figure out their emotions, their feelings and their incredible passion that seems to consume them.

Quote Spotlight…
Laying myself bare, showing her everything I have, everything I am, I’m not afraid when I’m with her.
Its liberating.
Freeing. Like a little miracle. – Drew

I loved reading these two characters come together once again! Drew and Fable fumble through uncharted territory for neither has ever been in a truly committed relationship. They are experiencing all these raw emotions for the first time while trying to find balance and move forward from the ugliness that still haunts them. Drew is still dealing with a past that won’t let go and Fable is trying to learn to trust Drew and his commitment to her, all the while she continues to care for her teenage brother and wayward mother, leaving Drew and Fable with their fair share of problems to work through. The secrets revealed in the first book were shocking and you just don’t often see these circumstances and I absolutely loved reading this power-couple sort themselves out!

Quote Spotlight…
”Fine. I’ve always run away in the past. But you, Fable. You make me want to stay.” – Drew

This book was edgier, way sexier and full of compelling angst and sweet romance. It gave me butterflies, it made me sad, it gripped my heart and squeezed it tight. It was beautiful, it was emotional and it was tragic but not overwhelmingly so. It was also a bit longer, coming in at about 200 pages. It was perfect!

Quote Spotlight…
I really don’t want chivalry tonight. I want comfort. Passion. I crave what Drew can give me. Delicious hot kisses, unbelievable pleasure… - Fable

I’m a total fan of this author now! Not only did she give a magnificent sequel to an already fabulous first book, but she left her characters strong and resilient. Fable was an extraordinary female lead who stood her ground and wanted to prove herself worthy. Drew is sexy and troubled but his morals are solid and he has a beautiful personality that’s caring and strong.

Quote Spotlight…
“Now, we own the happily ever after and we refuse to let that bitch go.” - Fable

There was even room to build in this world she’s created. I hope we soon see a story for the handsome, mysterious restaurateur, Colin, because he’s next on my “must stalk him” list!

The Wrap Up:
This may have been the conclusion to the Drew and Fable story but this is definitely not the end of my fan-gushing for this author. Any time Monica Murphy wants to write a book, I'm going to be in that line, waiting for my copy!

  1. What a great review! It sounds like a wonderful romance. I love that she only lets herself wallow a little before picking herself back up and being a strong female lead. Thank you so much for sharing. Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

    1. Thanks so much Jaclyn and thanks for stopping by! It really was a terrific read. I love strong, independent female leads who can pick themselves up after something major... Fable totally fits that description. I hope you have a chance to read and love these two books as much as I did. Good luck!
