BOOK BLURB:
He was my best friend, my best not-really-big-brother, and my best protector.

He was my best everything.

He was mine.

Coming home is hard for Lane. Hard because Harry, her beloved uncle, has died suddenly, but also because of him. Kale.

Kale Hunt has been her best friend since childhood. But it was never that simple. He was Lane’s reason for leaving home and moving to New York. Seeing him with someone else, in love with someone else, shouldn’t have hurt. But it did. It really, really did. So she upped sticks and left, started a new life and cut herself off from her past.

But now she’s back, and all the feelings are right there. As if she had never left.

Emotions are running high for everyone, and tragedy has a funny way of bringing people together. But is Lane reading the signs right? Are they still just friends, or is there something more?

The Review:
This was a beautifully told second-chance romance that held me captive til the very end!

Lane Edwards left home and traveled thousands of miles across the ocean to the big city of New York, all in the effort to heal her broken heart. Her beloved uncle is the only one she keeps in contact with from her close knit family, but after he dies, she has to return home and finds everything has changed, but it’s also stayed exactly the same.

I absolutely loved her family. The dynamics were so true to life. Soothing over hard feelings for her leaving was just the beginning in repairing all the damage that was done. Lane has to reconcile that her running may not have been the best choice and when she finds the secrets buried in her family's silence, she realizes she made mistakes, own up to them and she does all she can to fix them.

And that includes mending her broken heart with the man she’s loved since she was a small child.

Kale was a couple of years older than Lane and grew up as her honorary brother, protecting her and caring for her. He was also her best friend, her confidant and the one she ran to when she needed someone to talk to. As they grew older, feelings changed, leading to years of miscommunication and bad decision making. Eventually, Kale chose another, so Lane left him. But he never forgot her and he ALWAYS considered her his best friend and his family.

When she comes back for her uncle's funeral, Kale realizes it’s his chance, maybe his only chance, to make things right.

I loved Kale. He was so broken. In the years Lane was away, Kale experienced so much pain and loss and it changed him. Lane, suffering the effects of a broken heart and soul searing depression, changed too and watching these two find their way again, find each other again, and find their hearts and love again, was beautiful. It was so well written. I loved the heartfelt flashbacks to their childhood. The author did a fabulous job letting us see their closeness and the strong feelings they weren’t able to face.

An unrequited love that wasn’t so unrequited, this highly emotional story gave me all the “feels”! The end was a little mushy for my tastes, but after all the pain these two suffered, maybe a little mush was needed. I can’t wait to do a reread!
