A Superbly Written, Intensely Dark Romance!
The Review:
On the last page of this book, I was stunned into silence for over an hour as I sat in front of my computer, trying to figure out how to write my review. Five stars just isn’t enough.

I had so many questions and doubts; so many reasons to hate and fear him. But when he touched me...poof.
I no longer remembered, nor cared.
There is raw, wounding emotion in this book. Jethro and Nila flip back and forth many times during the first half, convinced they both loathe and care for the other. Then about midway of the book, things explode and it’s an out of control tilt-a-whirl going up and down, round and round and not stopping until the last sentence. And then right when you think things might start to turn in their favor, it leaves you breathless thinking, this can’t be how it ends! Thankfully, it’s not. It’s just a massive cliffy and one that’s sure to keep me awake at night trying to figure out how this is all going play out.
Love and passion have absolutely no place in the circumstances Pepper Winters has spun for the main characters in this dark series but that’s precisely what she’s given us. She’s taken two extraordinary characters and placed them in insurmountable odds where cruelty and vileness run rampant and she’s filtered in love, acceptance and understanding... even forgiveness and we find the light in the dark. It take true talent to accomplish that and keep you cheering for the heroine who’s one step away from giving up and the male lead who is more anti hero than hero. I absolutely love Jethro and I love Nila. Their story is gut wrenching at the best of times and at the worst, it’s down right terrifying and disturbing and absolutely magnificent. I was still cheering for Jethro even when he was encased in his “ice”.

When Jethro said he and Nila were well and truly fucked, he wasn’t lying. The Hawks family is disturbed on so many levels and their reasoning is steeped in the depths of insanity. Their morals are nonexistent and I have to wonder what was bred in them to make them so ... wrong! Not all of them are that way but the ones that actually have some semblance of a soul don’t stand up to the others so there’s obviously a bond forged in responsibility, history and absolute fear that keeps them all from killing one another.
This book is intense and compelling and I just Couldn’t. Put. It. Down! So, so good!
And the heat? Yeah, Jethro and Nila were so steamy-sexy together, even in the midst of all the was going on around them, their passion was scorching hot as they lost their souls in one another. This author can write one hell of a sex scene!! *fans self*
Jethro is not evil but he’s in need of some rewiring. I kept thinking he was going to stand up to Cut, to them all and fight to keep what was his but something is broken in him that I think was in the beginning stages of being healed. But that dad of his... that man needs a “fixing”!
As for Nila, she wavered, a lot. But even when it seemed she was done and had given up, the spark was still there and she pulled through and turned herself from victim to conqueror. She let her fear and emotions and love shape her into something... more. And that is what I think will save them both in the long run.
Regardless, as of right now, they are both still fucked.

Now lets talk about the writing! This author just gets better and better with every book. She can make me feel with the exquisite beauty of her words. She can paint a picture so distinct, so disturbing, so vividly imposing and mind blowing, it leaves me in awe. In one part of this book, I literally had chills when Nila was paying the second debt. I felt like I was right there beside her, enduring it all. It’s poetic beauty!
The Wrap Up:
I am aching to get the next book in this series. I HAVE to know what’s next for Jethro and Nila after how things were left in this book. This author is definitely the Queen of Cliffys and it’s going to be a torturous wait!
