AUTHOR’S TAKE ON GRACE from LOCK AND KEY

Grace started out being a hardened former Old Lady and an embittered widow. But as I wrote her, she wasn’t so bitter or hard. She revealed herself to be more of a good girl with a tough exterior. She’s used to the biker way of life, rolls her eyes, rolls with it, doesn’t get excited or melodramatic about it. She never even got uptight about how to fit in during her early days with the club which I liked. I know I would have. She just knew she was in love with this man (Dig) and that was it for her, she focused on that. She takes the crime element in stride as well.

This is a woman who all her young life played by the rules, kept her head down and did the “right” thing, and where did it get her? Nowhere. Within the club she found a real family and a somewhat consistent, no bullshit way of life.

It was so much fun writing her scenes from her early life in the club as she became an Old Lady to her first husband. I liked showing that antithesis of how she was and what she grew into all due to the Club. Her self-imposed exile from home and the club is in some ways a good thing for her, but also rather sad. I really saw Miller and Grace as being each other’s refuge. They both find a new quiet, profound, and strong place together. They won’t put up with anyone’s rules or limits anymore.
