Book Blurb:
Emma decided to skip the gym and went home early. It was the last easy decision she made because she found her roommate being raped by the boyfriend. She had two choices. Call the cops and be killed by his family’s mafia connections or kill him first and hope to survive. There was no choice to her. She killed the bastard first and went to the one person who could protect her. Carter Reed. He’s a weapon for the rivaling mafia family, but he’s also Emma’s secret. Not only was he best friends with her brother, but she’s the reason he became that weapon in the first place.

The Review:
I really, and I mean REALLY, wanted to love this read. It had a fantastic premise with a hot, intense alpha male who was dark and mysterious.. and he stayed that way up until about halfway through the book when he and everything else in the story just started slipping down hill.

Story...
This story opens up in a most horrifying way with Emma holding a gun to her roommates boyfriend while he’s raping her. After she kills the boyfriend, her and her roommate know they are in trouble because of who the boyfriend was. He’s the son of a mob boss. Scary right? Absolutely. So she and her roommate take off and go to a friends house. Emma knows she’s going to need major help so she seeks out an old friend from years ago, who just happens to be a big shot in the cities rival mob.

In walks Carter Reed who just totally blew me away. He walks into the spotlight and I instantly got butterflies. He was handsome, dark, edgy and totally sexy. He has been secretly keeping tabs on Emma all these years, so we have the whole hot alpha stalker effect which if done right, can be very sexy and I'm here to say the author played this out really well.

There’s even a huge shootout where Carter goes all “Boondock Saints” on us and takes out everyone around with a hail of bullets flying through the air. SUPER HOT!

And then...

Nothing. The book gets bogged down, the story goes stale and Carter Reed loses his hot mystery vibe. I kept expecting something.. anything.. to happen. But it was just So. Slow!

And the worse part? Emma turns into a crying machine. This girl teared up or cried over everything. I understand her freak outs. Some bad things went down for her in this book but I really wanted our heroine to “woman up” and take charge. When I first started reading this book, I was hoping for a whole “Bonnie and Clyde” effect, but thats definitely not what we got.

Also, there were way too many side stories going on between Emma and her friends and their budding relationships. The book lost its focus and tried to make to many relationships happen all in one story. I would have preferred a series with the other relationships sussed out and kept the main focus on Carter and Emmas romance.

And lastly, the steamy scenes in the first half of the book were perfect, but then they were just glossed over and left up to our imagination. Boooo :(

The Wrap Up:
I really enjoyed the first half and I also enjoyed the conclusion. I do wish the book had of kept its focus on our MC’s and really explored their emotions, Carters mob ties, Emma’s place in his life and how they work through her predicament. Maybe even throw in some flash back because they had a whole history to pull emotion from. Overall, this book was good but could have been great!

Buy the Book!
