The Review:
I greatly enjoyed this one. From the moment this story opens, you know you’re in for something special. I Love You I Kill You is suspenseful, thrilling and fun, filled with one harrowing adventure after another, with fast paced writing that keeps things feeling interesting, energetic and dangerous, all the way to the exciting end!
Story/Characters...
Paul Mancari has been a mob hitman for most of his life, working for Mr. Cardi, mob boss to Chicago’s biggest crime family. In the past, he’s carried out his duties without emotion and with absolute precision. But Mr. Cardi has just ordered a hit Paul doesn’t think he can carry out ... the murder of his ex wife, Sherry, a woman he finds he might still have feelings for.
This story follows Paul as he desperately tries to find a way out of the contract kill his boss has ordered. From calling in favors, to asking advice from old friends, to pleading with the boss himself, to even seeking answers from a higher power, Paul works tirelessly to save Sherry, all the while contemplating the path of his own life. But you don’t say no to Mr. Cardi and when Mr. Cardi strikes back, it starts an intense, panic-fueled ride, full of twists and turns in a risky, frenzied adventure to see who will reach the end alive.
At first, I wasn’t sure I was going to be Sherry’s biggest fan. She seemed so naive and a bit of a complainer. Paul was doing everything he could to keep her alive but she couldn’t seem to understand their situation. However, as the story progressed, she learned truths that had previously been hidden from her, she learned about the dangerous world she’d unknowingly been a part of for so long and it changed her dramatically. Then surprisingly, when tragedy struck and despair surrounded her, her resolve set in, making her both a scary ally and a fierce adversary.
Paul was having an attack of conscience. He wanted a different life but he knew once you’re in with the mob, the only way out was usually in a body bag. He didn’t want to kill anymore. He wanted something normal, maybe with Sherry, but definitely away from the life he’d been living. Paul was searching for redemption, a deeper meaning, a connection to normalcy but he was conflicted too, because he felt he didn’t deserve it after all he’d done. He might have been a hitman, but he’d reached a point in his life where he was struggling with what to do and it was easy to connect with his character. He felt very human.
The Wrap Up:
Thrilling, suspenseful, sometimes scary, and sometimes heartbreaking, Paul and Sherry’s journey was one crazy situation after another as they ran for their lives. At every turn, there was a new threat, a new danger, a new betrayal, and a new obstacle to overcome. Yet all the while, there seemed to also be some higher power watching over them and guiding them to a new avenue. I enjoyed reading every step of their journey. This author always seems to be able to pull me into the story and make me a part of the adventure. This time was no different.
An intense read, that is a must-read!
