Simply Amazing! An Adventure Worth Reading... For All Ages!
The Review:
I knew after that opening dream sequence where a super tall Macho Man Randy Savage the size of the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man from Ghostbusters was attacking the city, we were in for one heck of a ride with this story. I wasn’t wrong! After reading the first book in this series, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this second installment in the adventures of Jack and his friends. Trust me, it was worth the wait. Earthman Jack vs. the Secret Army was such a joy to read. It was adventurous, exciting, loaded with amazing, creative story and character building that kept me glued to the pages, and it’s brimming with fun pop culture references, humor, and heart stopping adventure.
I couldn’t put this one down!
Story/Characters...
After the first book and the devastating realization that he could never go home, Jack finds himself truly alone for the first time in his life, even though he’s in the company of good friends. Jack and company are on their way to Omnicron Prime where almost immediately upon arriving at the capitol of the Galactic Empire, Jack’s friends take their leave to continue their own lives, leaving Jack in this new, strange world by himself. He’s having to face problems he's never had before, and situations he doesn't know how to handle.
He’s deciding the course of his future, making new friends and fame and celebrity status follow him around. But not all is well in his new life. He slowly starts to unravel a Deathlord plan that will destroy his new home and the entire universe. Things are not safe, no one believes him and he knows he must do something before it’s too late. He's a stranger stranded in a place unrecognizable from his own.
The galaxy is in danger, war is on the horizon and some are already fighting the battle for their lives. Jack has the courage and the will. All he needs to do is get his friends to believe him, get the girl he loves out of the clutches of the enemy and save the entire galaxy from extension. Easy, peasy. Right?
But just as before, Jack comes out fighting and determined to save the day.
There are a plethora of hilarious, scary, thrilling moments in this fabulous book. There’s also a sweet love story taking place as things heat up between Jack and Anna but with her royal position and Jack’s Earth origins, it’s complicated at best. Throw in a controlling government, a third party love interest and a band of Deathlords trying to annihilate everything in sight, things become unglued quickly. There’s plenty of “feels” as the author gives us a bit of teenage angsts while Jack experiences true heartbreak and struggles with his Earthman feelings.
Jack is an amazing character. He’s courageous, smart and has a great personality. You can’t help but love and feel for him. He finds himself in the craziest situations, most steeped in perilous danger, but he pushes forward, even at the risk of his own life, to make sure justice is upheld. He cares deeply for the old life he lost but he also loves the life he’s now leading. He finds ways to thrive in uncertain circumstances and he wow’s both the reader and his mates.
The crew is back in action and the rag-tag team we grew to love so much in the first book are given plenty of page space. We get to see more of their personal lives outside of Jack’s adventures and we’re given insight into their pasts. I loved getting to know them better.
The Wrap Up:
EJ2 opens with a slow slide into awesome. And it continues to build and expand until the climatic ending! It may be labeled young adult and centered around the life of a headstrong fifteen year old boy, but it’s definitely a read for all ages. I read this for myself, then passed it down to my daughter who loved it just as much as I did.
Jack will totally make you believe in heroes again. He’s unique amongst his peers and written so well, you’ll believe in the world the author creates. I had so much fun reading this book. It’s uncompromising story, it’s adventurous plot and it’s well crafted characters will endear you, make you reminisce about your own childhood and bring all the adventures you once thought were possible, back to life. I can’t wait to see what Jack and friends get up to next. Whatever it is, sign me up!
