“You say I’ll never own you. If I win—you willingly give me that right. You sign not only the debt agreement, but another—one that makes me your master until your last breath is taken. You do that, and I’ll give you this.”

Nila Weaver’s family is indebted. Stolen, taken, and bound not by monsters but by an agreement written over six hundred years ago, she has no way out.
She belongs to Jethro as much as she denies it.

Jethro Hawk’s patience is running out. His inheritance gift tests, challenges, and surprises him—and not in good ways. He hasn’t leashed her but he thinks he might’ve found a way to bind her forever.

Debts are mounting. Payment waiting.

REVIEWERS NOTE: First Debt is book two in the Indebted series and is an Adult, Dark Romance written by Pepper Winters. I was gifted a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review through The Rock Stars of Romance.

Dark, Twisted and Delicious! This One Had Me In Knots the Whole Way Through!

The Review:
Pepper Winters does it again! I devour everything this author publishes. She’s my go to author for dark and twisted and definitely sui generis in her ability to shock and expose every raw nerve a reader can have. I love everything about her style.

In the first installment of this series, Debt Inheritance, I was appalled and gutted. But with this second installment, which was filled with even more tension and nail biting moments, she raised the bar and amped up the whammy! I’ve said it before. I’ll say it again. Her work can send me into a tailspin and I just KNOW when I’m done, I’ll need a Xanax and intense therapy.
And I love every mind-blowing minute of it!

Story/Characters...
Nila Weaver is paying a debt she didn’t incur. Her family had been tied up with the Hawks family for over six hundred years and past events are playing out in the present. This book opens up directly where the last one left off, on that huge, leave-me-breathless cliffy!

Nila ran as she was told to do and wanting her freedom, gave it her best shot but the attempt was futile. Jethro found his mark and made her his captive once more.

We find out more about the history between the Weavers and the Hawks and the question of why there’s a debt is explained. Many questions from the first book are answered only to have many more posed.

I loved how Nila became bold and developed a backbone. She decided not to take this all lying down and decided to try and play the game but she’s outmatched by centuries of Hawks getting their evil on. They’ve been playing for hundreds of years, generation to generation and she has to find her own way in this unfair, scary, insane world of theirs.

She wavers between courageous and hopeless and I don’t blame her. About the time she fortitude's herself and thinks she’s going to be able to survive this, a new hell is presented to her and breaks that building spirit inside her. But I love that she’s still fighting

Jethro Hawk... to say I didn’t like him in the first book is an understatement. The man exuded sinister evil and not in the good way. I loved the story this author presented us and I loved the direction it was going but I also knew that if I was going to find common ground with Jethro and warm up to him at all, there was going to have to be a significant change in him. He could be evil and vile and dark all day long but there had to be a redeeming quality in him somewhere for me to connect with. I shouldn’t have worried. This is the Pepper Winters show and as she has in the past, she presents this macabre world where anything goes but then changes the game entirely. She delivered that one thing I needed in order to see Jethro in a new light. She humanized him and oh my, it was so thrilling to see that glacial fortress around his heart and soul crack just a bit.

I hate Jethro. I love Jethro. I want Jethro! I want to beat the hell out of Jethro. I want to kiss Jethro! Oh my god, I want to be in Jethro’s bed Right. Now! Yeah, that about sums up the emotional roller coaster I went on when it came to Jethro. He’s so fucked up yet delectable!

Jethro is in this chaotic farce unwillingly and knows he has to play the game if he’s to survive. And play the game he does. Some of the things he had to do, including take out the first debt on Nila, will haunt me for a long time to come. After those scenes, I sat back and tried to live in Nila’s world and it was soul searing and gut wrenching. Even after one... or maybe three.. bottles of wine, I still had a hard time stepping into her shoes. She is well and truly fucked!

I can’t wait to see how this all unfolds. It’s definitely going to be a nightmarish but exciting journey and if that was the lightest of the debts, as Jethro stated when he explained how it all would work, I’m sure I’ll need copious amounts of wine to get through the next book and the next debts!

Knowing who to trust, knowing who holds all the cards, knowing who’s hiding secrets and who is being honest is almost impossible. This is the snake pit and anything goes! This is the magic this author creates!

The Wrap Up:
The entire way through this book, there was a burning pit of dread and intense emotion swirling around inside me. This story was dark, twisted, sinister, delicious and devastating. I loved every tumultuous moment of it. There was a pretty big cliffy at the end so be warned. I’m anxiously awaiting the next release. I can’t wait to find out what happens next!
